EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF THE PERMEABILITY-CONSTANT OF THE FELT

In a classic stack with flow-through design, the electrode felt has a significant share on the pressure drop of the battery stack. For simulating the flow through these electrodes, the permeability constant is needed. This number is a material constant, which can vary between felts of different manufacturers. As the felt manufacturers don’t provide this number, we have to measure it ourselves. Therefore, we have built up a special test rig, that consists of a measurement cell, tank with temperature control, pump, pressure sensors, flow sensors and temperature sensors. The testing cell was designed and manufactured by our partners at PAIC. With this test rig we can measure the pressure drop of the felt under the same conditions as in the battery, namely with electrolyte and at the running temperature. So, we can determine the permeability of different felt electrodes. These numbers help us to conduct precise CFD simulations of our battery-stack.
